What a CEO should expect from an HR partner
An HR partner is not a vendor who delivers reports. They are a trusted adviser who understands your business, gives you a direct view on people decisions and stays through implementation. If your HR partner is not doing these things, you are not getting what you should.
The most important quality in an HR partner is directness. A good HR partner tells you what they think, not what you want to hear. They will tell you when a hire is wrong, when a policy is creating risk, when a performance issue has been avoided for too long. If your HR partner only confirms your existing views, they are not adding value.
The second quality is business understanding. HR advice that is not grounded in business context is generic and often wrong. A good HR partner understands your sector, your competitive position, your growth stage and your culture. They give you advice that fits your situation, not advice from a textbook.
The third quality is implementation capability. Advice without implementation is incomplete. A good HR partner does not just recommend — they help you execute. They draft the policy, facilitate the conversation, support the restructuring. They stay until the outcome holds.
The fourth quality is discretion. People decisions are sensitive. A good HR partner handles information about your organisation and your people with appropriate care. They do not share client details, they do not use your situation as a case study without consent and they treat confidentiality as a professional obligation.
The fifth quality is availability. A good HR partner is accessible when you need them — not just at scheduled meetings. People issues do not wait for the next quarterly review. You should be able to call your HR partner when a situation arises and get a useful response.

How is an HR partner different from an HR consultant?+
An HR consultant typically delivers a defined piece of work — a policy review, a compensation benchmarking exercise, a training programme. An HR partner is a more ongoing relationship, where the adviser understands the business context and is available for a range of decisions over time.
When should a CEO have a direct relationship with the HR partner?+
Always, for significant people decisions. The HR partner should be accessible to the CEO directly — not only through the HR head — for decisions about senior roles, restructuring, leadership development and culture. These decisions are too important to be filtered.
How do you evaluate whether your HR partner is adding value?+
Ask yourself: are they telling me things I did not already know? Are they helping me make better decisions? Are they staying through implementation? If the answer to any of these is no, the relationship is not working as it should.
