What makes a management development programme effective?
Effective management development is designed around real workplace challenges, not generic content. It builds skills that managers can apply immediately, involves practice and feedback, and is supported by the organisation's leadership.
Most management development programmes fail not because the content is wrong but because the design is wrong. Generic content delivered in a classroom, disconnected from the manager's actual work, produces little lasting change.
Effective programmes are built around the specific challenges managers face in the organisation. The case studies are real. The practice scenarios come from situations managers have actually encountered or are likely to encounter.
Application matters more than attendance. A programme that requires managers to apply what they have learned between sessions — and to report back on what happened — produces more lasting change than one that is entirely classroom-based.
Feedback is essential. Managers need to know whether they are applying the skills correctly. This requires observation, coaching or structured peer feedback — not just self-assessment.
Leadership support is the most important factor. If the organisation's senior leaders do not model the behaviours the programme is trying to develop, the programme will not hold. Development works best when it is reinforced from above.

Talk to Kriate HRCommon questions
How do you measure whether a management development programme has worked?+
Agree evaluation criteria at the design stage — typically a combination of participant feedback, manager observation and agreed behavioural indicators. Review these at the end of the programme and recommend follow-up where needed.
How long should a management development programme run?+
Long enough to allow for application and behaviour change between sessions. A focused workshop series can be delivered in four to six weeks. A full leadership development programme typically runs over three to six months.
