When should you bring in external HR advice?
External HR advice is useful when you face a decision that requires specialist knowledge, when you want an independent perspective, or when the internal team does not have capacity to work through the issue thoroughly.
Most HR decisions can be handled internally. But some situations benefit from an external perspective — either because the decision is complex, because the internal team is too close to the situation, or because the stakes are high enough to warrant specialist input.
Restructuring and role redesign are common triggers. When an organisation is changing its structure, the people involved in the change are often not well-placed to design it objectively. An external adviser can bring a clearer perspective and help manage the process.
Compensation reviews are another. Compensation decisions have long-term consequences and are difficult to reverse. An external view on whether the organisation's compensation is competitive and internally equitable is often worth the investment.
Sensitive people situations — a senior exit, a grievance involving a leader, a performance issue that has been avoided for too long — often benefit from external advice. The adviser can help the organisation think through the options and the risks without the emotional weight that internal stakeholders carry.
The right time to bring in external advice is before the decision is made, not after. Advice given after a decision has been implemented is harder to act on and more expensive to correct.

How do you choose an HR adviser?+
Look for someone with direct experience in your sector and organisation size, who gives you a clear recommendation rather than a range of options, and who is willing to stay through implementation rather than just delivering a report.
Is external HR advice confidential?+
Yes. All advisory engagements should be handled with discretion. Confirm confidentiality arrangements at the start of the engagement.
